Almitas: Latin for nurture and kindness
Mission:
To identify and empower innovative organizations around the world to affect lasting change for orphans and vulnerable children.

“Our Children. Our Responsibility” highlights our belief that all children are “our” children, regardless of race, class, color, caste, nationality, or religion.  Children must be the responsibility of all.

The Problem
UNICEF estimates that there are 133 million orphans in the world and millions more are considered at-risk or without parental care.  These most vulnerable of children face an increased risk of abuse and exploitation: child labor, sex trafficking, child soldiers. Without the protection of a parent or caretaker, they slip through the cracks of society. The rampant destruction of HIV/AIDS and other diseases, poverty, conflict, corruption, and natural disasters not only escalate the problem but also limit the capacity of many communities to fight back on a large enough scale to contain the crisis.

Nevertheless, there is hope. There are thousands of valiant individuals at the grassroots level who are devoting their lives to caring for these children in thoughtful, effective and innovative ways. Oftentimes, they simply lack sufficient resources to sustain and grow their efforts. Unfortunately, they also often miss the attention of outside donors because of their lack of visibility.

“We are guilty of many errors and many faults, but our worst crime is abandoning the children, neglecting the fountain of life. Many of the things we need can wait. The child cannot. Right now is the time his bones are being formed, his blood is being made, and his senses are being developed. To him we cannot answer ‘Tomorrow,’ his name is today.”
